Meet the genuine side of Stockholm! In Södermalm fashion and trends is really important, but the best of it all is the mix with the old inhabitants. Rough neighborhoods (not so much nowadays) meets cool restaurants. If you are looking for hipsters - you are on the right spot!
To Do
Mariatorget - nearby Slussen you will find a picturesque square and a more posh part of Södermalm. Art galleries, cafés with their own coffee roasteries and chic boutiques. Start off with a coffee at Kahve (Blecktornsgränd 8) or the neighbor café and art gallery
Magnolia. From there it is close to the beautiful
Monteliusvägen situated on a hill with a magnifique view of the centre of Stockholm. Closer to the subway you will find two coffee roasteries -
Drop Coffe and
Johan&Nyström. Try the delicious swedish coffee with a cinnamon bun!
Nytorget - in a more southern part of Södermalm you will find Nytorget. Another small square (really nothing special) but it is completely surrounded by chic boutiques with swedish fashion and restaurants. The area called
SoFo (South of Folkungagatan) is a vivid area. Shop a pair of jeans from
ACNE or browse for a fashion scoop at the giant vintage store
Beyond Retro.
Hornstull is an area that the last year has been up to a big facelift! A new
shopping mall and lot of restaurants has really been given this area a leap ahead. Why not grab a juice from popular
Juiceverket or a sausage for lunch at
Taylor&Jones? And do not forget the
flea and food market every sunday may until september!
To Eat
There are so many great restaurants in Södermalm it could keep you occupied for years trying them out! But I will give you a few of my favorites...
Kvarnen - a classical swedish beer hall. Typical Södermalm! One of the bearhalls are newly redesigned in a czech way. Try the swedish cuisine and meatballs - you wont go from Kvarnen hungry, I promise!
Sardin - at Nytorget you can find the perfect restaurant for the first date or a girlfriend dinner. A tiny restaurant where you can't book a table, but it is worth the waiting! Take a glass of cava at the bar and ponder over which tapas you are going to eat. Unforgivable.
If you are planning to head out in the nightlife of Stockholm I would recommend
Urban Deli, a restaurant, bar, bakery and grocery store - for a great start to a long night. Here the beautiful people are eating and drinking. Try the beef tartare (it is the best!).
For a posher feeling try
Hotel Rival, owned by ABBA-Benny. An exciting hotel where there is always something taking place - concerts, theaters or lectures. They serve a great brunch in the weekends!
And for all the hipsters -
Barbro (in swedish both referring to a women name and that is is a bar near a bridge) in Hornstull. Asian cuisine in a relaxed way. There is also a cinema at the bottom floor. Here you can really count the men who don't have beard and checked shirt.
There is really so much to tell you about my beloved Södermalm. So hang on there, more is to come...
